Are you having pain in your forearm just below your elbow? Is it keeping you awake at night or aching throughout the day? YOU COULD BE SUFFERING FROM BLACKBERRY SYNDROME! This affliction is named after the Blackberry cell phone, but it could be from too much texting, video games, overuse of the mouse on your computer, or overuse of emailing on your cellphone. I have had several clients come to me complaining of forearm pain, sometimes so bad it has kept them awake at night. So what is causing the pain? There are 26 muscles from your elbow to the tips of your fingers. These muscles allow all the movements of your hands and fingers. I am sure you have heard of tennis elbow or golfers elbow from friends or physicians. These injuries are due to over-gripping of the racquets and clubheads setting off spasms in the forearms that shows up as pain in the elbow. The reason for the elbow pain is each of the affected muscles attach to the boney knots you feel on each side of your elbows. If you grab your shirt and pull it apart at the seams you can see the individual threads. It is the same thing where the muscles attach to the bones, therefore you will usually feel pain in the attachments areas versus the belly of the muscles. For Blackberry Syndrome, we will focus on two muscles that are causing the pain, the Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus and the Brachio- Radialis. You can feel these muscles easily. With your palm facing the floor and your arm extended, you can see a ridge of muscle on the top side of your arm just below the elbow. The inside part of that ridge is the Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus and the outside part of the ridge is the Brachio-Radialis. Now gently press on these muscles, You may feel some pain, sometimes sharp or sometimes dull and achey. SO HOW DO WE GET RID OF THIS PAIN? First, using your thumb on your opposite hand, slide your thumb up your forearm from your wrist to your elbow. The reason for this movement is to flush out the lactic acid, muscle waste that builds up from use, back towards your lymph nodes which are in your armpits. Continue doing this movement repeatedly until it no longer is painful to rub. You may have to do this over a period of several days before it stops feeling painful. Normally, there should be no pain when you rub any part of your body. Some people may say their skin is tender, but in most cases it is the underlaying muscles that are tender and not the skin. So if you have tender places on your body, it could be just your muscles getting overused, or underused, either way massaging your body is important. The next thing you want to do for your forearm pain is stretching. The best stretch for this area is to sit in a chair, place the elbow of the arm in pain on your knee, make a light fist with the hand of the affected arm, take your opposite hand and place it on your light fist, then press your fist down toward the floor. Hold this stretch for two seconds and release. Repeat this stretch ten times. I would suggest you massage and stretch both arms even though only on arm is having pain. In most cases, clients bodily aches and pains are from overused or underused muscles and not joints or nerves. Learning to stretch your entire body, regardless of your age, can allow you to move freely with little to no pain in your day to day activities.
